EU-China R&D Cooperation

The European Union (EU) and the People's Republic of China (hereafter in short "China") support R&D collaboration of their research organisations in joint international projects. A number of initiatives aimed at strengthening R&D cooperation. An essential increase of Chinese partners in projects within the EU's "Framework Programmes for Research and technological Development" has been achieved. In the ICT area this has been initiated and supported by the European Commission (EC) via the "Information Society Technologies" (IST) Programme of the EC's Directorate General "Information Society and Media". Of all the countries outside Europe and Israel, China has become the non-European country with highest number of participations in IST "Calls for Proposals".

EU-China R&D cooperation is supported by SPICE project on a strategic level. SPICE will create a solid basis for future EU-China collaboration in ICT research by identifying and analysing potential topics and areas of research cooperation and initiatives between China and the European Union. The analysis and outcomes of SPICE will allow the European Commission to create targeted initiatives in thematic sub-areas of ICT. Find more information on the benefits of SPICE at SPICE Project Services.

The new "ICT programme" within the EU's 7th Framework Programme for R&D started December 2006. More projects in collaboration of European and Chinese partners are expected to be proposed, launched and funded. Projects when selected in "Calls for Proposals" can receive a financial contribution of the ICT Programme. Inform yourself on the international R&D cooperation schemes at International R&D Cooperation and find more information on the funding opportunities at Funding Opportunities.
